IBus in Ubuntu 11.04

Intelligent Input Bus (IBus) is an framework for multilingual input in Unix like software. This became the default input method for Ubuntu from the version Ubuntu 9.10. (see wikipedia entry) This is very easy to set up and use as an input method. There are several key board in different languages including phonetic keyboard. This was working very good till now. But I have just install new version of Ubuntu (11.04 64 bit) and there it stopped working. Thank fully I got the solution from one post in the Linux user group of Delhi IIT.
To get it working you have to install ibus-m17n using this command.

sudo apt-get install ibus-m17n
Now go to language support from the System menu. Install the language you want to use. Dont forget to install input methods. (it will be install automatically if you do not uncheck any option while installing language.) and select IBus as input method in language support menu.
Now go to IBus preference and select input method tab. And from the drop down menu you highlight your language and it will show input keyboard that is available with it. Select your favorite keyboard there and click add. You can add more than one key board.
When you writing any document you can switch on the input method by pressing ctrl + space
key and toggle between different keyboard by pressing Alt + Shift  key Hope this will help who want to use multi language in there Linux system.

  1. Hi Apurba..,
I tried what you have written.
But my problem is that I cannot see the language pack which i have installed(malayalam) in ibus input methods listing.
I have installed the language pack from language support after installing m17n package and have selected input method as ibus as well.
    So everything should be perfect.
Still why is it not shown in the ibus input method listing in the input methods tab??
    Any solutions...?

Try reinstalling the ibus-m17n once again and see. I am attaching one screenshot for you in the following link.

  3. Hi Aswin,
First of all sorry for so late reply. In answer I can say you first install the Maalayalam language from language support and then try installing ibus-m17n. This should show you the option in the input method. I have checked that maalayalam option is coming in the add input method option, though in ubutu 13.04 beta. But previously I have checked with 12.04 also and it worked.
